The global research firm NPD reported today on the huge growth of boardgames and Jigsaws in the UK, and we know incidentally across Europe. It’s a bit of positive news showing that even in the worst of times there can be some upside, not only for retailers but also for the families bonding over games.
The Games and Puzzles leaf of the Toys category accounted for 21% of the weekly spend on the toys category in the first week of the crisis with a value growth of 240%. The classic version of Monopoly leading the way.
In other categories Outdoor and Sports saw significant growth along with Arts and Crafts.
Frederique Tutt, Global Toy Market Expert for The NPD Group says: “Our figures clearly show that consumers are preparing for the coming weeks of isolation with a selection of family board games, outdoor and seasonal summer toys, craft kits and building sets…”
